Join Disability Law Colorado for an afternoon of education and an evening of celebration at Disability Law - Know Your Rights on October 19, 2016 where we will be conducting breakout sessions, hosting a resource fair, and celebrating the career of Geoff Peterson, who is set to retire at the end of this year.  The Colorado Civil Rights Division will be leading two of the breakout sessions during this event as well.

We will begin in the Meyers ballroom, which is located on the 2nd floor of the University Center.

We thank the Council for Exceptional Children Club of Colorado Mesa University and the Colorado Civil Rights Division for helping make this event possible.

2:30 – 3:00 pm              Disability Law Colorado Past, Present, and Future

3:10 – 4:00 pm              Breakout Session #1

Topics

  • Anti-Discrimination in Employment: This breakout session will be presented by the Colorado Civil Rights Division (CCRD). CCRD's training provides the basics of Colorado employment anti-discrimination laws.  The class includes discussion of protected classes, harassment and discrimination in the workplace, and rights and responsibilities of employers and employees.  An overview of the Colorado Job Protection and Civil Rights Enforcement Act of 2013, effective January 1, 2015, is also addressed.  
  • Service Animals: This breakout session will be presented by Disability Law Colorado and will include a discussion about the law regarding service animals in Colorado.  Of note, we will discuss the the new law that was passed this year making it a crime to intentionally misrepresent an animal as a service animal.
  • Voting Rights: This breakout session will be presented by Disability Law Colorado.  This workshop will focus on empowering individuals to know their voting rights and help them advocate for themselves. What to expect: an overview of federal and state laws that protect people with disabilities and their right to vote; learn the different ways you can vote in Colorado; understand available assistance to help you cast your vote; and learn about available ways to file a when elections are not accessible to people with disabilities.
  • The Accountable Care Collaborative: Medicare-Medicaid Program: This breakout session will be presented by Disability Law Colorado and will discuss the advocacy services that are available to dually eligible beneficiaries enrolled in the Accountable Care Collaborative.

Topics

  • Fair Housing 101:  This breakout session will be presented by the Colorado Civil Rights Division.  CCRD's housing anti-discrimination training provides an introduction to Colorado fair housing laws.  The class focuses on protected classes and disability discrimination, including reasonable accommodations and modifications.  
  • Special Education Law: This breakout session will be comprised of a panel of individuals to discuss current issues in special education.
  • Rights of Residents in Nursing Homes and Assisted Living Facilties: This breakout session will be presented by Disability Law Colorado and will discuss what rights an individual has when they reside in a nursing home or assisted living facility.
  • What the Division of Vocational Rehabilitation (DVR) Should Do for You: This training will be presented by Disability Law Colorado and will discuss the changes made to the Rehabilitation Act by the Workforce Investment and Opportunity Act (WIOA).  Major changes that will be discussed include requirements that DVR get involved with students during high school, DVR must spend 15% of their resources on kids in transition, and DVR must act as the gatekeeper to ensure that people with intellectual and developmental disabilities are not being forced into sheltered workshops.
